Smartphones excel at multitasking, which makes it easy to forget that every extra activity has a cost.

Navigation has transformed everyday travel. Missing an unfamiliar turn no longer means stopping beside a tea stall and attempting an elaborate conversation involving hand gestures, landmarks and three contradictory directions.
